Biography

James A. Smith, Senior Member
James A. Smith, is a Materials Characterization & Processes Systems Engineer at the Department of
Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL). He holds engineering degrees from Iowa State University (BS)
in Engineering Science and Mechanics and a master’s and PhD. from Texas A&M University in
Mechanical Engineering and Interdisciplinary Engineering. Jim has contributed technical knowledge and
systems to Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE), instrumentation, process measurements and sensors
industrial sectors. He has taken measurement system design concepts into plant prototypes by
developing collaborations and establishing customer’s core needs. Jim has installed custom
instrumentation within nuclear, hot processes, and medical industrial sectors. He specializes in
developing custom measurements and processes through novel measurements and analysis techniques.
Jim holds the following intellectual property: 1 commercialization license, 10 patents, 1 trade secret, 1
CRADA, 2 software copyrights, 7 patent applications, 35 invention disclosures, 135 internal reports, 117
papers/proceedings, Energy I-CORPS Cohort 10 graduate.
