Biography

Mathias Bonmarin studied at the graduate school of science and engineering “POLYTECH Marseille” part of Aix-Marseille University (France) and obtained his master’s degree in biomedical engineering in 2002. He then moved to Grenoble Institute of Technology to gain an additional master's in optics, optoelectronics, and microwave. After a year working as a scientific assistant at the Fresnel Institute in Marseille, he decided to broaden his perspective and studied economics at the University of Louvain-La-Neuve in Belgium where he graduated “summa cum laude.” Mathias moved to Switzerland in 2006 to do his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the University of Zurich. He joined the School of Engineering of the Zurich University of Applied Science (ZHAW) as a research associate in 2010 before being appointed senior lecturer at the Institute of Computational Physics in 2014. Between July 2018 and July 2019, Mathias was a Fulbright visiting research scholar at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences of the University of Cincinnati in the US.

Since July 2019 he is a Professor of optoelectronics and leads the Sensors and Measurement Systems group at ZHAW. His research interests focus on the development of innovative sensors and instruments for medicine and biology. Mathias is IEEE senior member (IMS and EMBS) and received the 2019 Best Application in I&M Award.

Biography

Paolo Attilio Pegoraro received the M.S. degree (summa cum laude) in telecommunication engineering and the Ph.D. degree in electronic and telecommunication engineering from the University of Padova, Padua, Italy, in 2001 and 2005, respectively. From 2015 to 2018, he was an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Cagliari, Cagliari, Italy, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Electrical and Electronic Measurement. He has authored and co-authored over 90 scientific papers, mainly published in international journals and in proceedings of international conferences sponsored by IEEE Societies. His current research interests include the development of new architectures and measurement techniques for the monitoring of modern power networks, with particular attention to synchronized measurements and state estimation for transmission and distribution grids. Dr. Pegoraro is a member of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society TC 39 – Measurements in Power Systems, and of IET TC 38 – Instrument transformers.

Biography

Datong Liu (M’11-SM’16) is currently a Full Professor with the School of Electronics and Information Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), Harbin, China. He received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Instrumentation Science and Technology from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in 2003, 2005 and 2010, respectively. During May 2013 to June 2014, he was a visiting scholar in the System and Industrial Engineering (SIE) Department, University of Arizona (UofA), Tucson, AZ, USA. He served as the TPC Chair of 2017 Prognostics and System Health Management Conference (PHM 2017 – Harbin) and TPC co-chair for a series of prognostics and health management (PHM) related conferences. His research interests include automatic test and condition monitoring, unmanned systems, sensor fusion, data-driven diagnostics and prognostics, industrial big data, lithium-ion battery management, etc.

Biography

Pawel Niewczas is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK. He is leading the Advanced Sensors Team within the Institute for Energy and Environment in the same department. His main research interests center on the advancement of optical sensing methods in such areas as power system metering and protection; gas turbine monitoring; downhole pressure, temperature, voltage and current measurement; sensing in nuclear fission and fusion environments; and other sensing applications. He has published over 70 technical papers in this area. Distinguished Lecturer (May 2013 thru December 2016)
