Shervin Headshot
IEEE I&M Society President 2025-2026

Dear members, colleagues, and friends of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS),

I am honoured to welcome you to the IMS website. For the next two years, I have the privilege of serving as the IMS President. I would like to thank the IMS Junior-Past President, Dr. Juan Manuel Ramirez Cortés, for his leadership over the last two years, and I am happy that he will continue to serve the IMS at least for the next four years and provide his valuable advice and guidance.  Thanks to the selfless efforts and dedication of our IMS community, including the IMS Administrative Committee (AdCom), over the past few years we have become part of a community that has excelled in many aspects. Allow me to elaborate.

In IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (TIM), we have the world’s number one journal in the area of general instrumentation and measurement, in terms of impact factor, article influence score, and many other metrics. Our gold open access journal, the IEEE Open Journal of Instrumentation and Measurement (OJIM), which was launched in 2022, has been indexed in the Web of science in its first year of eligibility, is IEEE’s fastest gold open access journal in terms of submission to first decision timeliness, and should receive an Impact Factor in June of this year. Our magazine, the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Magazine, has become a popular source for accessible introductions and overviews of the latest trends and technologies in instrumentation and measurement, with many highly-read and influential articles, tutorials, columns, and departments. Last year, our conferences attracted a huge number of attendees and, consequently, generated a record surplus. Our membership is as strong as ever, with great diversity and with many active chapters around the world, celebrating IMS’s 75th anniversary this year! In the education department, we have brought to fruition video tutorials, continued to grow the popular IEEE IMS Distinguished Lecturer program and support our younger members with grants and awards. Finally, our technical and standard activities portfolio is healthy, working on or maintaining standards, such as the popular IEEE 1588, as well as holding conferences and running other initiatives. Financially, IMS is doing exceedingly well thanks to the above-mentioned high-quality offerings and fiduciary financial planning.

I am confident that with your contributions and participation, we can continue to grow IMS and take it to new heights. I invite you to take advantage of IMS offerings, and remain in touch through this website, the IMS Newsletter, and participation in your local IMS chapter.
Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you in person at our many IMS events in the near future.

Sincerely,
Shervin Shirmohammadi, Ph.D., IEEE Fellow
Professor, University of Ottawa, Canada
President, IEEE IMS
